If you’re new to cannabis, it can feel overwhelming trying to figure out some of the terms you hear as you start your marijuana journey. Common questions that arise when it comes to measurements of weed include: What’s the difference between a gram and an eighth? And, how much weed is in an ounce?
If this applies to you, don’t worry. We’re going to give you a quick guide on the basic measurements of cannabis flower. We’ll also give you an idea of what you can expect to pay for each amount. Keep in mind, these are just estimates. Prices will vary depending on where you live and the quality of the flower you’re buying.
Weed Amounts
Understanding different weed measurements will not only make your visit to the dispensary easier – it can also help you spot good deals on cannabis flower. Let’s start with the smallest amount and move up from there.
How Much is One Gram of Weed
The smallest weed measurement of weight on our list is a gram. If you want to envision how much a gram of weed looks like, think of the amount found in a large pre-rolled joint. The lightest weight of cannabis you can buy, one gram will consist of one large bud, or two smaller buds – and will typically cost about $10 – $15.
Back in the day, those purchasing a gram from their “guy” might have asked for a dime bag – referring to the $10 price. Dime = $10 .
How Much is a Dub of Weed?
A “dub” of weed typically refers to $20 worth of cannabis. The actual amount you get for a dub can vary depending on the quality and market price of marijuana. Generally, a dub can amount to around 1 to 2 grams of weed. In dispensaries, you might find that a dub’s exact weight can vary slightly, but it usually aligns with a quantity that would be priced around $20.
For reference, a single gram of weed costs about $10 to $15, while an eighth (3.5 grams) typically costs around $40 to $50. Thus, a dub, costing $20, generally falls between 1 and 2 grams, aligning with market rates.
What Is An Eighth of Weed?
The next size up from a gram of cannabis is an eighth of an ounce. An eighth equals 3.5 grams – and is the standard amount available at dispensaries. Many cultivators will save their biggest and best-looking buds for their eighths.
An eighth will usually consist of two large, or four medium-sized buds. The typical price for an eighth of marijuana is right around $40 – $50.

What Is a Quarter of Weed?
If you think back to middle school math, you’ll remember that ⅛ plus ⅛ equals ¼. Although the most common packaging for flower is eighths, from time to time you’ll also find larger containers equaling a quarter ounce. A quarter ounce of Mary Jane equals a little more than 7.08 grams and will typically cost about $100.
What Is A Half Ounce?
Two quarters give us a half. And since each quarter ounce of weed equals a little over 7.08 grams, that means there are about 14.17 grams in half an ounce of weed. Since the standard package of cannabis at a dispensary is an eighth of an ounce, a half ounce will be made up of four, one-eighth containers or two quarter-ounce containers. A half ounce of cannabis will tend to run about $135 – $150.
How Much Weed is in an Ounce?
Most of you math wizzes have probably figured out that one ounce of weed equals roughly 28.34 grams. A nickname for an ounce of weed is an “oz” – which is an abbreviation for the Italian word for ounce, onza. Other old-school abbreviations for an ounce of weed include a “z” or a “zip”. Some believe this came about since a full ounce of weed fits nicely in a standard Ziploc® resealable bag.
An ounce of weed can cost between $250 – $350 depending on where you live.
A Pound of Weed
So, if one ounce of cannabis equals about 28.34 grams and there are 16 ounces in a pound, that means there are roughly 453.59 grams in a pound of weed. You won’t have to worry about how much a pound of weed costs because the limit for most is usually a few ounces per month.

- An “LB” – the standard abbreviation for a pound
- Elbow – a combo of phonetic and mnemonic devices for “LB”
- A pack – used to refer to multiple pounds (10 pack = 10 lbs)
It’s highly unlikely that you’ll ever have to order a pack, but if you do, give your friends a call – because Trips Are Always Better With Buds!
