How to Get the Weed Smell Out of a Car, Clothes, and Room

Hopefully, this has never happened to you. You’ve enjoyed a little bit of cannabis and go about your business. As you walk around, you notice people looking at you. You convince yourself that you’re just being paranoid and continue on. Then suddenly, someone walks up to you with a big smile on their face and says, “Hey … smelling good!”

Just then you realize the smell they’re talking about. That smelly smell. That sometimes sweet and sometimes skunky smell that can stick on you long after your session.

Loved by many and hated by some, it can stick to everything and can be quite difficult to get rid of. That is why we’ve compiled some tips to help you avoid smelling like marijuana after your session.

Of course, one of the best ways to hide the scent of weed is to avoid getting the smell on you or your belongings in the first place.

That’s why we’re going to share tips on what you can do before your session – as well as what you can do after your session to avoid smelling like smoke.

Let’s start with an easy scenario.

Getting the Weed Smell Out of Your Car

Ahead of Your Cannabis Session

Of course, we do not recommend smoking and driving. The same goes with driving after you have smoked. But, let’s say you go to a drive-in movie and your friends want to enjoy a toke in your car while watching the movie.

Here are a few tips on what you can do ahead of their session to avoid having your car smell like weed.

Remember, one of the best ways to avoid smelling like weed is to avoid getting the smell on you in the first place. So, crack open a couple of windows and turn on your AC/ fan to help the smoke escape your vehicle, instead of it seeping into your upholstery.

Make sure the Air Recirculation button is OFF – so you can get rid of the smokey air and bring in fresh air from outside.

You will also want to have some kind of air freshener or odor eliminator on hand. For situations like this, where you might smoke in a small area, odor eliminators like Ozium Air Sanitizer can be extremely helpful.

Unlike air fresheners that simply cover up any wanted odors, products like Ozium actually help to neutralize and eliminate odors. So, if you plan on allowing friends to smoke in your car often – a can of Ozium can be a worthwhile investment.

In addition to using an air sanitizer or odor eliminator after each session it is also a good idea to invest in an air freshener for your car. The clip-on type that you can attach to an air vent can do a nice job of helping your car smell fresh for a few weeks at a time.

Another helpful suggestion, might be to bring along your own sploof to help filter out any unwanted scents.

After Your Session

So, let’s say your friends have finished their session in your car. Now, you must shift your attention to cleaning up. The first thing you should do is open your windows and turn on your AC/fan to help get rid of the smoke in your car.  Remember to turn the Air Recirculation button OFF – so you can bring in fresh air from outside instead of recirculating the smokey air.

Make sure to put your smoking supplies away in a smell proof container and spray some air freshener or odor eliminator. Once you have the odor in your car under control, you’ll  want to shift your attention back to those tips we shared earlier after an outdoor and indoor session:

  • Wash your hands or use some hand sanitizer
  • Spray a little bit of perfume or cologne on yourself
  • Brush your teeth, grab some gum or breath mints, or use some mouthwash
  • For extreme cases, take a shower and change your clothes

What if you discovered this blog post too late and have already allowed the smell of smoke to seep into your car? Then, you may need to take additional measures.

Start by vacuuming your carpets and cleaning the surfaces in your vehicle to clean up any ash or small pieces of weed that may have fallen onto the upholstery. For extreme cases, baking soda can be helpful. Sprinkle some onto your carpet and let it sit for about 24 hours. Then, make sure to vacuum it up very well the next day.

Besides these tips, you can also refer back to the tips we shared earlier for eliminating odors after you smoke indoors, which include leaving a couple of bags of activated charcoal hidden under your seats to help remove the smell of smoke from your car.  Another option is to leave an open container of ground coffee in your car overnight.

If the tips provided above don’t do the trick, consider taking your car to a car wash and asking them to shampoo the carpet in your car with a deodorizing shampoo.

Keeping The Smell Off of You Ahead of Your Outdoor Session

One of the easiest ways to avoid having the scent of cannabis smoke follow you around is to take your sesh outdoors. Of course, you should only do so if the laws and regulations in your area allow it.

The first thing to consider when smoking outdoors is the direction of the wind.

There are a couple reasons for this. First, you’ll want to make sure the wind isn’t blowing the smoke back at you! Second, if you’re smoking in an area with other people around who may not be cannabis friendly, you’ll want to be considerate and not have your smoke blow in their direction.

It is also a good idea to keep your stash in an airtight container, so the smell doesn’t linger once you’re done smoking.

Getting The Smell Off of You After Your Outdoor Session

So, let’s say you’ve successfully taken your session outside and have managed to avoid having anyone smell your smoke. Now, you’ll want to make sure to get rid of any odors that may have made their way onto you.

First, you’ll want to wash your hands to make sure you get any residue off of them. If washing your hands isn’t possible, clean your hands with some hand sanitizer.

Next, you’ll want to freshen your breath so it doesn’t smell like smoke. So, grab some gum or breath mints, rinse your mouth out with mouthwash – or brush your teeth.

If you can, take a shower and change your clothes. If not, spray a little bit of perfume or cologne on yourself. Be careful not to overdo it, you don’t want to smell like an unpleasant mix of smoke and strong perfume or cologne.

Getting the Weed Smell Out of a Room

Alright, now that you know what you can do to avoid smelling like weed after smoking outdoors, let’s consider what you can do when enjoying your weed indoors.

Ahead of Your Cannabis Session

Remember one of the best ways to avoid smelling like weed is to avoid getting the smell on you in the first place. One of the easiest ways to do so is to establish some air flow.

If possible, open a window or two and do your best to exhale out the window. The air flow should help keep the smoke moving through your place instead of lingering and seeping into your clothes and belongings.

If you have a fan or air filter those can be helpful in creating airflow, so the smell of smoke does not linger. If opening a window is not possible, consider smoking near your kitchen vent while the fan is turned on to the highest setting.

Something else you may want to consider is to use a sploof or smoke filter.

One of the easiest ways to make your own sploof is to use the cardboard tube from an empty roll of toilet paper and add a sheet or two of fabric softener into the tube. Then when you smoke, you can exhale through the tube. Instead of filling up your place with smoke, you should be able to exhale a nice fresh scent.

One last thing you can do ahead of your session is to light a candle or some incense. One old-school favorite brand of incense for many cannabis users is Nag Champa.

After Your Session

So, let’s say you’ve finished your session. Before you get too comfortable, you’ll want to shift your attention to cleaning up.

Put your flower and smoking utensils away in a smell proof container. Keep your candle lit or light another incense. If you have a fan, turn it on and point it toward an open window to help blow the smoke and smell in your home out!

Make sure to clean up your sesh area well. Wipe down the area to get rid of any small pieces of weed that may have spilled out. Also, don’t forget to clean out your ashtray.

At this point you should have most of the odor in your place under control. Now you will want to shift your attention back to those tips we shared for making sure you don’t smell like smoke after an outdoor session:

  • Wash your hands or use some hand sanitizer
  • Spray a little bit of perfume or cologne on yourself
  • Brush your teeth, grab some gum or breath mints, or use some mouthwash
  • For extreme cases, take a shower and change your clothes

If after doing all this, you still notice a hint of odor indoors, here are a couple of possible solutions. Besides traditional air fresheners, activated charcoal can be effective at eliminating odors.

Bags of activated charcoal can be purchased online and can be strategically hidden in your home to help get rid of most smells. Dried coffee grounds also work great at deodorizing. You can set a small bowl of dried coffee grounds near where you had your sesh and it can help to absorb unwanted odor.

Remember, the best way to avoid smelling like smoke after a session is to avoid getting the smoke on you in the first place. And, air flow is key in doing that. Whether you are smoking indoors, outdoors, or in your car make sure to have a plan in place to help that smoke make its way away from you.

And, if avoiding the smell of smoke is very important to you, perhaps vaping your cannabis might be a better option. Not only does vaping give off much less smell than smoking – but the lower temperature required to vape THC, compared to smoking, could be healthier for the lungs and airways.

Removing the scent of cannabis from your clothes can be achieved through several methods, each effective depending on the intensity of the smell and the materials involved. Here are some reliable techniques:

  1. Wash with Vinegar: Add a half cup of white vinegar to your wash cycle along with your regular laundry detergent. Vinegar is a natural odor neutralizer and can help in removing lingering scents without damaging your clothes.
  2. Use Baking Soda: For clothes that are particularly smelly, sprinkle baking soda directly on the garments before washing. Baking soda absorbs odors effectively. You can also add a half cup of baking soda to your laundry load during the wash cycle.
  3. Air Out: Sometimes, simply airing out your clothes can significantly reduce the smell of weed. Hang them outside in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, which can help the odor dissipate naturally.
  4. Steam Your Clothes: Using a garment steamer or hanging your clothes in the bathroom while taking a hot shower can help remove odors through steam. The heat and moisture help to release and dissolve the particles causing the smell.
  5. Use Odor-Removing Sprays: There are commercial sprays available specifically designed to neutralize odors. Products containing enzymes that break down odor-causing molecules can be particularly effective. Be sure to choose a spray suitable for use on fabrics.
  6. Lemon Juice: For a natural solution, add a bit of lemon juice to the wash cycle. Lemon’s natural acidity helps break down the oils and compounds in weed smoke that cling to fabric.
  7. Essential Oils: If you want to not only remove the weed smell but also add a pleasant scent to your clothes, add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to a damp washcloth and toss it in the dryer with your clothes. Lavender, eucalyptus, or citrus oils can leave your garments smelling fresh.

Preventive Tips:

  • Smoke in well-ventilated areas to prevent smoke from settling on your clothing.
  • Consider changing into designated smoking clothes that you can wash separately.

By using these methods, you can effectively remove the smell of weed from your clothes and keep them smelling fresh and clean.
